All VHDL code described in the book is on a companion CD. The CD also includes the GNU toolsuite with EMACS language sensitive editor (with VHDL, Verilog, and other language templates), and TSHELL tools that emulate a Unix shell. Model Technology graciously included a timed evaluation version of ModelSim, a recognized industry standard VHDL/Verilog compiler and simulator that supports easy viewing of the models under analysis, along with many debug features. In addition, Synplicity included a timed version of Synplify, a very efficient, user friendly and easy to use FPGA synthesis tool. Synplify provides a user both the RTL and gate level views of the synthesized model, and a performance report of the design. Optimization mechanisms are provided in the tool.

Very Difficult to Read

As the title said, this book has a lot of good examples on how to write VHDL code with good coding styles. Most of the good coding style tips in the book make sense and I use it in my work. However, I don't think this is a good book to learn VHDL. The syntax is explained in the same style as the VHDL Language Reference Manual, which is very dry. For example: the author explained the syntax of for loop like this: loop_statement ::= [loop_label][iteraction_scheme] loop sequence_of_statements end loop [loop_label]. I learned some VHDL constructs from this book but they are not very clear. After finished reading the book, I still feel something missing and I need to refer to other VHDL books to fill up the gap. The author also spent only a few pages on synthesis and the index is poorly organized. With all of these and combined with its ridiculous price, I would recommend to borrow the book from library if you want some tips on good coding styles. But I won't recommend to buy it if you want to learn basic VHDL, because the book is no good for that purpose.

Best practical book I have read yet.

This is an excellent book for the practicing engineer who wants a real world example. The book has many examples of code which will compile and work. In addition it has recommendations on best practices ( 2 thumbs up) and worst practices (2 thumbs down) with a rational for why you would want to follow the recommended practice. It also makes clear distinction between sythesizable code, and behavioral code. Compared with the other books which are heavy on the language semantics (and examples that won't compile) this is a much more usable book. The hardware desiner will find this to be the best book they have.

What a book!

This book has just become my number one book to recommend to the students of the VHDL classes that I teach. It is very well written and the book is loaded with VHDL examples demonstrating the various constructs, statements and issues. In example 5.5.1.2, the author does the best job I have ever seen of explaining the difficult subject of "Projected Output". The subjects are frequently associated to the specifications found in the Language Reference Manual. When there is a linking issue between two or more design elements, the linking is clearly demonstrated with examples. The only negative is that the author spends far too much time and book space describing ways to "Enhance Readibility" or documenting your design--which is always a personal preference. But still, a five star book.

I'm stuck on it!

This book was everything I expected - comprehensive, accessible and well organised.
The book has some deep chemistry in it without being opaque. I am an inorganic chemist by training though haven't worked in the field for 15 years and I had absolutely no problems with it. This book is not for the general reader but I would suggest that any technical person who is not necessarily a chemist could get through it.
Remember - this is a handbook. As such it is designed to be a reference when faced with a problem like "What's the best glue for a metal to nylon bond?" I use it for amateur researce into glues and wood bonds. In that role, it is invaluable to me.

As a professional in the adhesion industry, this book is a valuable desktop companion. I use it when I am asked a question that is far afield of my normal scope of business. It contains a broad base of information on how various materials can be used, what they can bond, and the strengths and properties one can expect. However, it lacks the depth to make it useful in anyone's field of expertise. That is often not a problem, and I would recommend it to any professional in the industry, as it will help with data and additional sources of information when they are trying to find answers that are outside the normal scope of their experience and daily tasks.
As an aside, I would recommend that anyone purchasing this volume keep a copy of MIL-HDBK-691B nearby, as it covers many of the same topics and can provide a quick second opinion in adhesive/bonding selection and methods.

John E. Fa is Chief Conservation Officer at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Visiting Professor at the School of Biological Sciences, Imperial College London. Funk FSB is the founder and Director of Nature Heritage, a consultancy for conservation biology and anthropology, and a Research Fellow at the University of Puerto Rico's Center for Applied Tropical Ecology and Conservation. He specialises and works worldwide in conservation biology, genetics and ecology.

Donnamarie O'Connell is Senior Training and Projects Manager at RSPCA International, responsible for running programmes in southern Africa. She has an academic background in zoology and conservation biology.

Don't waste your time.

Thank heavens I didn't pay for this. I can find the same information, better written and well organized, for free. The 20 minutes I spent skimming through this book was 20 minutes I wish I'd have spent reading something useful. I give it 2 stars only because it did in fact contain *some* information... just not enough that I'd recommend anyone bother reading it.

Best Mono book yet

I prefer this book to the Mono : Developers Notebook which was also recently published. This book provides a much wider angle view on the .NET cross platform development space. For example, the developers note book covers TK#, this book covers TK# and #WT.

This book is much more architectural in design than the Developers Notebook. So if code is your thing then you may want to evaluate both. I personally prefer architectural perspective because in this case it's more about choosing a direction of development as opposed to learning the structure of the TK# library, which is interesting, but can be gleaned from the online documentation.

This is a must have book for anyone who wants to take their .NET code beyond the confines of the Windows operating system. It's well worth the price of admission.

alternatives to Microsoft

Microsoft and cross-platform?! Sounds like an oxymoron. Yet the book shows how .NET has given rise to this. The key step was Microsoft transferring the specifications of C# and .NET's CLI to ECMA and ISO. This lets third parties write compilers that produce IL bytecode and thence to assembly in a given hardware.

So you could write C# code on some platform, like linux. Then with Mono or Portable.NET, produce x86 binaries.

The authors describe the open source Mono and Portable, and compare these with Microsoft's own .NET offerings. They show that Mono and Portable are quite functional. For example, using Portable, you can write in Java, C#, C or VB.NET and compile.

The book goes into some moderate level of detail about CLI. But if you are a programmer in C# or C, say, and you just want to get native binaries, without wanting to know about CLI, the book is still useful. You can safely skip the CLI sections, without losing the gist of what you need to know. For many of us, whatever language we use, we don't need or want knowledge of a specific assembly language.

Good on principles, shallow on cross-platform libraries.

Okay, I got this book mostly to get into issues common to cross platform development. With focus on say, cross-platform gui libraries, and other cross-platform libraries.

In that I was a bit disappointed, but I was very happy to see how many somewhat advanced design principles were covered, and the breadth of this book. I am hoping that they expand into at least a companion book on maybe the Tao libraries, GTK#, wx.Net and other cross-platform libraries for front-end/interface coding.

I've also been reading the Nantz book for "Open Source .Net Development" and found it to be even more broad, and more shallow. Hopefully we will see some books that cover a bit more depth on fewer topics, and more specifically towards open-source cross platform libraries.

It is definately a good book, and covers a lot into the hows, and why's, but not so deep in any of the topics covered that you get a solid grasp on anything beyond design principles... This gives it a Four-Star rating in my book. It's worth a read for a mid-level developer looking to branch out into more serious development, or a development manager looking for better organization into development (cross platform or not). Don't expect to walk away comfortable on any of the tools that are mentioned in the book.
