Remarkable in its breadth

There is a current fascination with randomness and techniques using randomness to understand nature, biology, physics, mathematics, etc. This book is a collection of essays of varying length about randomness together with two long panel discussions at the end about whether the universe is computable and the nature of randomness. At this point I must give a disclaimer, in that I am the author of one of the articles; however, I will write this review based on the articles that are not mine! The articles are by many of the leading lights in a remarkable diverse collections of areas related to this topic. There are experts here in physics talking about things like quantum mechanics, and the Copenhagen interpretation and the nature of space time. There are experts in the area of algorithmic randomness where we try to give meaning to the notion that an individual sequence is random.
There are leading computer scientists who discuss relationships of randomness to algorithms and the relationship to things like computational complexity (meaning the intrinsic difficulty of computational processes when resources are used). There are articles by philosophers, and articles by people using probabilistic techniques in number theory. There is a lot more. The book grew from an earlier one planned by Zenil called ``Randomness: 5 questions'', which asked authors how they got into mathematics/computer science/biology/physics etc, what are the big questions etc. This format gives the reader some idea as to the topics discussed in the book, though authors have not stuck to that format. It is a book aimed at the general scientist/philosopher/mathematically literate
reader. You won't learn the precise details of quantum mechanics in this book, but what you will learn is a great deal about current thinking of a collections of leading experts in a broad range of topics in and around randomness. It certainly gave me much food for thought. I certainly found a lot of food for thought here, and regard this as an excellent addition to my library.

I wish this book had been published earlier! …If you use NASTRAN on a daily basis as the Number 1 Code, you will find that Dr. Komzsik's book is unique and outstanding, compared to all other Finite Element books. Look at the real life examples. It shows that Dr. Komzsik studied mathematics and then was, for over 20 years, one of the team leaders at MSC developing and maintaining NASTRAN. All of the important features in real life applications are explained in a few sentences and illustrated if necessary…
I highly recommend this excellent book for every engineer. Even for students, it is very affordable and should be used as a standard reference whenever a Finite Element code is applied.

May not be what you're expecting.

With a title that begins "what every engineer should know", you might expect this to be accessible to every engineer. However, if you're new to finite element analysis, you'll probably have serious trouble following the book.

This is an advanced math text, a series of mathematical algorithms for laying out and solving problems. It's about using finite element analysis more effectively and efficiently, not about learning to use it in the first place. Unless you already understand the topic - what finite element analysis does, how to use it, what sort of problems it can and can't solve - you probably won't get much out of this book.

The book may well be useful and readable for people who have prior experience with finite element analysis. I just can't tell. (If I could review it without giving it a rating, I would.) Just be aware that this is not a book for beginners.

About the Author
Josiah has been in the automated gate business for twenty years. Not twenty years give or take but, at the time of this writing, a solid twenty years. That’s a hefty amount of time spent designing, repairing, installing, and maintaining a wide variety of automatic gates. For the most recent decade of that time, he has operated a gate installation and service business where he left his mark all around the State of Washington in the form of residential and commercial automated gates he’s designed and installed. Giselle entered the fence and gate industry without knowing a thing about construction or, quite frankly, gates. She comes from a technology and education background where, in her earlier life, she blended the two disciplines to forge a career as a sales and technical training manager at various software firms. She loves education so much that she’s spent time teaching in Myanmar and earned a Master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California.

Essential information

This book has essential information for anyone who is contemplating the purchase of an automatic driveway gate. I mean...who knew such a purchase required so much research? Well, not only does this book explain why, but it'll help you make an informed decision based on facts and tips that the authors provided. Not only is an automatic driveway dangerous and composed of complex parts, but a lot goes into proper installation. If you're a homeowner thinking of adding one, you'll want to read this book first!

Actually a VERY helpful book

As someone who had no experience doing anything and with a wife bugging me to make the home look better I need any help I could get. This book gave some pro tips and great techniques for making the best driveway possible. I couldn't have done it without this book. Hoping they create more for other home projects.

About the Author
James A. Michener was one of the world’s most popular writers, the author of more than forty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Tales of the South Pacific, the bestselling novels The Source, Hawaii, Alaska, Chesapeake, Centennial, Texas, Caribbean, and Caravans, and the memoir The World Is My Home. Michener served on the advisory council to NASA and the International Broadcast Board, which oversees the Voice of America. Among dozens of awards and honors, he received America’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 1977, and an award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 1983 for his commitment to art in America. Michener died in 1997 at the age of ninety.

Poland

As a young reader I tended to be one of those people who ignored the explanations, forwards, letters from the author and so on so I could dive right into the story. Only later did I realize how much I was losing out on. I mention this because there are several pages at the beginning of this book that provide background information that will give you a good base from which to begin the story.

Another consideration is that the book was originally published in 1983. Poland didn't gain it's independence from the Soviet Union until 1989, so things have definitely changed. It's possible that some people may think there is too much description at times in the story. I believe some of that feeling comes from how open the world has become. Getting information on just about any subject is as simple as accessing the web. This was certainly not the case in the early 80's when getting more information required a trip to the library. We can now not only check facts and get additional historical information but even see portraits of the people involved.

From invasions by Mongols and Tatars in the early 1200's to the Soviet Union's attempts at keeping them under control in the 1980's the Polish people have resisted outside authority. One of the most surprising aspects of this story is how often an incredibly small group of powerful land (and people) owners sold out their country to foreigners thus leaving it open to invasion and division time after time. The wealthiest and most powerful nobles had nearly unimaginable power over the lives of the people they owned as well as the land, and the money to live beyond extravagantly.

For all of the turmoil, Polish people were incredibly adaptable. This is a country that suffered through deadly invasions, civil unrest, revolutions, and dissolution. Sometimes led by relatively benign rulers but many times by bloodthirsty invaders who looked at Poles as being subhuman. At one point, after being divided up between three other nations, it ceased to even exist. The people of Poland chose to never give up hope that it would one day become whole and independent again. They are an amazing group of people with a history to match.

The three families the story follows highlight Poland's turbulent history well. Fortune comes and goes. Some are caught up in revolution, others in war and invasion. All have to learn to adapt and some do it more successfully than others. There are people of integrity and other descendants who are repugnant. In other words, they are a mixed bag just like any other group of people who are followed through time.

It's hard for me to resist books like this. Authors who thoroughly research a subject and then create characters around it must work doubly hard. They bear the responsibility (some better than others) to be as accurate as possible and at the same time must tell a story that will engage readers. The few best give you a story about fictional people you come to care about while teaching history. They take history and humanize it. James Michener was one of the greatest.

A must read -again- for those of us whose family have roots in historic Poland.

Today with attention being drawn again to the general region (Ukraine), Michener's Poland is a reminder of the historical spirit, tenacity, and passion of the people of Eastern Europe. I only wish I understood more of what has happened in the region since the ending of this novel. I do have enormous pride in my family members who stayed to rebuild or who immigrated to America to bequeath this passion to future generations. To Anton and Josephine, my paternal grandparents, I salute your bravery.

Easy Way to Learn History

I read Poland when it first came out and now I have read it again on my Kindle. My roots are Central European and unfortunately our education system does not do justice to this subject. The book is an easy to read historical novel based on historical events. I recommend the book to anyone interested in Poland and adjacent areas.

We finally get answers!

The fourth book in the Grayton Series is the long awaited book that we finally find out what happed to Marissa, the sister that disappeared shortly after tuning seventeen. The five siblings had all been adopted by the Grayton’s, each coming from horrible circumstances. Roman has been looking for her even more than his other adopted siblings because they shared a secret, Roman and Marissa had fallen in love. While they had shared more than the other siblings, even Roman didn’t know as much as he thought he did about Marissa. That being that while they all came from horrible pasts, Marissa’s past had found her which meant that her future was not as cut and dry as the others. She felt that she had no choice but to run just as she had no choice but to hide. Now that Roman had found her everything was going to come out into the open, why she ran, why she was still running as well as what she was hiding. Will their love be able to stand the test of time when all of her secrets were out in the open?

Like the other books in the series, I highly enjoyed this one. A close nit family who have stood by each other and continue to do so regardless of where they all started out. I loved the beginning just as much as I loved the ending but I will say that I wish there was an epilogue, something with all of the family together with their Dad and Aunt showing how each of their lives turned out a few years later or so but I’m not complaining at all. I highly recommend this series and while technically they can be read as stand-a-lone, it’s best to read them in order. Especially books three and four.

Roman and Missy have been in love since they were kids

Roman and Missy have been in love since they were kids. Missy disappeared when she was 18 and Roman never quit looking for her. When he finally finds her, he is shocked to find that he has a son. Missy has a lot of secrets and he needs to find out why she left and why she didn't tell him he had a son.

Marissa Grayton the other adoptive daughter of the Graytons, ran away when she was 17 years old. The rest of her siblings have been looking for her for years especially Roman Grayton but they didn't find her until now.

Roman Grayton a finally found the only woman who he had ever loved, Marissa. Now that he found her, he would do anything to make sure that she and their son, Reagan are safe.

Yes Missy and Roman had a son, it sure didn't sit well with the latter when he found out that she kept such a life changing secret from him. But all his anger subsided when he realized that she was protecting Reagan from the cult she belonged to when she was small.

IN TOO DEEP was beautiful, love how despite them both being adopted by the Graytons....Roman and Marissa never felt that sister and brother bond, they always had a deeper and more passionate connection.

The way Missy and Roman fought for their family was well done, the former faced her past.... and slayed the dragon in order to keep her loved ones safe.

Love the bond between Marcus, Casey, Cole, Marissa and Roman.....his book was filled with love, loyalty and understanding but most of all of it was about a family sticking together no matter what.

Jill Sanders did a magnificent job, looking forward to what she's got in store for us next with this incredible series.
