The Cooper-Grube edition is better

Waterfield was wise to substitute the phrase "Defence of Socrates" for "Apology". The original Greek word is apologia -- meaning 'self-defense' or 'vindication' -- from which we derive the English word "apology". However, it is misleading to call the work "The Apology" for English readers because Socrates doesn't apologize for anything in the monologue/dialogue! Indeed, it is Socrates at his brashest, defending his way of life with every breath he can muster. However, as with his Oxford translation of Plato's "Republic", Waterfield's explanatory notes do little to aid the reader in understanding the text. Those clarifying factual obscurities are almost invariably apposite and informative, but those of a critical and philosophical kind are, for reasons of compass, bound to be rather dogmatic. One must then ask, What was the purpose of producing this translation?

Good for beginners.

For teachers looking for something between a comprehensive collection of the dialogues and a photocopied hand-out, this little edition nicely fits the bill. It's an extremely user-friendly translation with a generous introduction and copious but clear and concise endnotes. The editor admittedly errs on the side of verbosity in the introduction, going to excessive (not to mention gratuitous) lengths to argue that the "Crito" is not inconsistent with the "Apology." Also, rather than substituting "defense" for "apology" and " goodness" for "virtue," he might have accomplished the goal of a clear and accessible edition by giving the reader a bit more credit. Finally, many instructors and readers would understandably be forgiven if they shunned this edition because of its omission of the "Phaedo," the final chapter in the trial, sentencing, and punishment of Socrates.

What is holiness, the mission of Socrates, and accepting the laws

These three dialogues together with the Phaedo cover the trial of Socrates. Of the three dialogues in this volume, the Euthyphro is the most abstract, and is the only one of that matters for the metaphysics of Plato, and is an extreme example of Socratic irony (e.g., if Euthyphro is an expert on religion then Meletus should indict Euthyphro for corrupting Socrates). In this dialogue Socrates tries to sort out a precise definition of what "the holy" is. He also talks about something like causation: "it is not because it is in a state of 'being loved' that an object is loved by those who love it; rather, it is in that state because it is loved by them."

The Defence of Socrates (the Apology) is an explanation of why Socrates thought his mission of questioning people who claimed to know things important and worth dying for: "are you not ashamed that, while you take care to acquire as much wealth as possible, with honour and glory as well, yet you take no care or thought for understanding or truth, or for the best possible state of your soul?" I can't think of anything that would better settle the mind of a thinking person who believes themself to be doing something right and is being punished for it. Socrates is more serene and has more to say than Jesus does in his trial and execution: Socrates never breaks down like in Mark 15:34 and he does not merely say "they don't know what they are doing" like in Luke 23:34 but explains why it is better to suffer evil than do it and that evil is done out of ignorance.

The Crito is probably the most interesting of these three dialogues for students of law; although the Defence is in a court, Socrates is not seriously trying to win the vote but is explaining himself. In the Crito, Socrates argues to Crito why one should follow unjust laws as long as they do not demand that one do evil.

Steve Fotheringham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Weber State University, A Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from The University of Arizona. But the only credentials he claims for this book is that he was an eyewitness. With family and news videos, text messages, emails, Aaron's written stories, journal entries, magazine and news articles, and DVR recordings that cover much of his life, coupled with the fact that Steve and his wife Kaylene were there most of the time, he was able to write an accurate and inspiring biography.

Great Read, Don't miss it.

"So pleasantly surprised! It's been a while since I've read a book with so many levels of interest. I thought it was going to be about a young man dealing with a disability who had big dreams. That's just scratching the surface. This book chronicles the story of an incredible family that have witnessed their adopted son's development into an international WCMX star. Told by the father of the family, we get an inside look into the creation of a new family, the creation of a new sport and the creation of an attitude of living that could benefit us all. Easy to read and hard to put down.

Great Book - You Won't Be Disappointed!

When I picked up this book I knew I was going to learn about an amazing athlete based on the cover! A man in a wheelchair doing a handplant at the skate park…WHAT? And boy did I learn. I learned about perseverance, dedication, attitude, and a desire to do what every other kid Aaron was hanging out was doing. Wheelz has fans around the world which is not surprising at all because of his devotion to a sport that not only inspires others, but pushes everyone’s thinking about a person with disabilities so far out of the box. What I didn’t expect this book to be was a “How to” for parents. How to not hold your child back from the things they want to try, even if it is a bit scary. How to encourage, support and love no matter what! How to fight for what they need. Steve Fotheringham tells stories in a way that makes you smile, laugh, cheer and cry. Being able to watch the video clips that he was referring to because the links were provided in the book was a perfect addition. So well written!

Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition

As the father of WCMX (or wheelchair motocross, for the uninitiated), Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition, served as a wheelchair stuntman in movies and TV shows, and toured the world with Nitro Circus and a host of charitable organizations. But it's his attitude that's truly remarkable. When a well-meaning preacher once assured him that he'd be able to walk after he was resurrected, Aaron's immediate response was, "What makes you think I'll want to?" Other kids had to leave their bikes outside as soon as they got to school, but he got to ride his bike everywhere he went.

WHEELZ affords its readers a behind-the-scenes look at Aaron's life and the rise of this bone-crushing sport. It's a one-of-a-kind book about a one-of-a-kind kid who never thought much of the fact that his legs didn't really work, and I highly recommend it.

Review by author of Relativity Demystified

This was one of the books assigned when I took general relativity in college. I found several of the chapters very enjoyable to read. D'Inverno does a great job getting into some of the fascinating physics that lies behind general relativity and its development, like Mach's principles and a great discussion of the equivalence principle. Much of the book is devoted to teaching you the mathematics, and it does so in a good fashion. He has two nice chapters on tensors with homework problems that are doable. One drawback was the book didn't have anything on Cartan's equations or discuss one forms (although he talks about contravariant and covariant vectors). The first half of the book is better than the second half, I found his chapters on special relativity excellent but felt his chapters on black holes and gravity waves were a bit lacking. In any case, I recommend it. Try beefing up your education by reading it along with Schutz so you get some exposure to one forms and all that.

A good introduction to general relativity

D'Inverno provides a very solid introduction to the general theory of relativity, starting with a short review of the special theory and moving through tensor calculus, the field equations, and some applications. One caution: the approach is entirely coordinate-based, so people wishing to get a full picture of general relativity may wish to supplement it with a more modern treatment, such as Wald or Hawking and Ellis.

The best intro book on GR !!!

This is without any doubt the best book one can use for starting with GR: it is self contained, well written and moreover it is full of Physical insight. In brief: a great book. Even the introductory mathematical part (about tensor calculus) is great written: not too short and not too long. If one would like to gain an additional point of view about tensor calculus I'd recommend to compare the way followed by R. d'Inverno with that followed by Richtmyer "Principles of advanced mathematical Physics" vol 2 (the last all done in geodesic coordinates: this is a book on maths and not about GR!!). The level of Ray d'Inverno is at advanced undergraduate/1st year graduate: in fact one can find a lot of well discussed topics that are generally left out in other books on the subject. Of course this is not an advanced text like R. Wald or Hawking-Ellis, which are the right books if one wants to get a deeper insight in particular topics. The only fundamental thing R. d'Inverno lacks to treat in a fully way is the form of the Energy of the Gravitational field in GR and its related problems: no specific discussion about it. I think this is an important topic. Typical TenNapel

I am a huge fan of Doug TenNapel. I own many of his previous works (Creature Tech, Earthboy Jacobus, Tommysaurus Rex, Black Cherry, and Iron West). This work is another great sci-fi fantasy romp with great art. Not my favorite work, but still very fun. A few notes:
1. Typical art by Doug TenNapel
2. Digest sized format
3. Family oriented story
4. Sci fi elements abound
5. Lots of action

A New Twist on a Not-Very-Old Story

I'm actually much older than this book's target audience. You might be wondering why I bought it then. Well, there are two reasons. The first is that I'm a fan of the author. The other reason is a bit more complicated.

If you've read the book synopsis, you're probably thinking this sounds an awful lot like the TV show, "Lost", and - to a degree - you're right. Both stories are about a group of castaways stranded on an island, both have the main narrative frequently inter-cut with flashbacks, and both contain unexplained phenomena that keep piling up. In fact, one or two of the phenomena in "Bad Island" have direct parallels in "Lost" (although TenNapel is good enough to put his own unique spin on them).

It goes beyond that though. Imagine if "Lost's" storyline had been 100 % planned out from the beginning and had actually answered all the questions it raised - that every little bizarre thing was given an explanation. If this sounds appealing to you, read on.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager that TenNapel found the basic premise of the show appealing, but was turned off by how it was actually handled and decided to vent this frustration by writing and drawing his own take on the concept. Granted, since this was his own take, this means a lot more monsters and a lot less humans...it's still a Doug TenNapel comic, after all.

If there is a sticking point (and sadly, there is), it's the characters; or rather, one set of characters. The story is actually two stories that intertwine at the very end: the main story and a subplot told in flashbacks. The characters from the subplot are very good, although they really don't take up much of the book. The characters from the main story, on the other hand, are a little on the...lacking side. They're very likable, don't get me wrong, but they're (for lack of a better word) sparse. For example, the main character Reese has a troubled relationship with his family, but it's never established why. What caused this tension between them? We'll never know, and the fact that we don't know makes them and their growth throughout the story that much less meaningful; we see the "after", but only get vague hints at the "before". To put it more bluntly, the flashback characters have a powerful arc; the main characters...really don't.

Still, this is very much worth a buy. If you loved every single aspect about "Lost" and want to see how someone else would have used the same concept, check it out. If you're like me and became disillusioned with how "Lost" dragged things out (and with how they ended the show), check it out. If you have no knowledge of or interest in "Lost", but just want a good story with really cool monsters and visuals, well...need I repeat myself?

If you could bring only one weapon to a desert island . . .

It's enough to make you want to take up brain surgery. I read some comics for kids and I can hardly move through the recycled tropes and old overdone ideas cluttering up the pages. Then I read a book by Doug TenNapel. When the man's Ghostopolis came out last year I was delighted. Sure, we've all seen the idea of the afterlife as a city done before (May Bird, Billy Bones, etc.) but TenNapel's storytelling managed to incorporate this odd and unique internal logic that I'd never seen anywhere before. Now I've picked up his next Graphix GN Bad Island and while I wish I could just compare it to something I've seen before I cannot. What currently operates in the brain of this man baffles me. His books read like fever dreams that make sense (and if rumors about his next cardboard-related comic are to be believed he's not exactly going mainstream anytime soon). Sometime a kid wants a stand alone graphic novel that also happens to be "epic". And if it's epic you seek, epic you will find in this strange near-indescribable little piece.

Okay. Here comes the tough part of the review. The part where I try to summarize the plot. Bear with me now. Two planets. Two rebellious sons. In a distant universe a battle wages. Giant creatures have secured the freedom of a relatively tiny species that they allow to live on their very skin. The giants rely on these people to operate their battle armor and other internal mechanics, which is a good thing since the tiny people's previous hosts have returned to reclaim their slaves. The son of the king of the giants is determined to fight as well, but his efforts lead only to his capture at the hands of the enemy and banishment to a far away world. Meanwhile, centuries later here on earth, teenaged Reese is trying desperately to figure out how to get out of the lame family vacation his dad has planned. No one seems thrilled to be taking a boat ride, not Reese or his mom or his snake-obsessed little sister Janie. And that's before the family gets caught up in a freak storm and shipwrecks on a strange deserted island. There they find creatures the like of which they've never seen, a strange artifact that appears to be leading them somewhere, and a malevolent presence that wants something that they have and is willing to do anything it can to get it back.

I recently had a conversation with a children's author about whether or not kids vs. teens prefer series books with cliffhanger endings. We both agreed that in our experience kids are actually less delighted by series than their older counterparts. A child between the ages of 9-12 is more interested in a bit of smart storytelling. Sometimes seeing a "1" on the spine just frustrates them. One of TenNapel's more remarkable qualities is the fact that he creates perfect little worlds that have no need of sequels. None at all. Now the danger of creating your own mythology is that no one else is going to buy it. And the best way to make them buy into it is to make it horrendously long or the first in a series. That TenNapel consistently packs whole worlds into his books without making them (A) 500 pages long or (B) The first of a 10-book series or (C) incoherent isn't just rare in this day and age. It's near impossible to find in any other GN author for kids. Thank god he actually has the chutzpah to pull it off.

Myth making is all well and good, but what sets this book apart from the usual heroic narrative pack is the family element. At the heart of this story is a tale about getting to know (and care about) your siblings and parents in the midst of true danger. As such, the book fleshes out a family that not only rings true on the page but that you want to know more about. I think the moment when I was completely on board with them was when Janie insisted on lugging her dead snake with her wherever the family went. The gentle macabre nature of this just struck me as oddly real. Then there's the change that comes over Reese's dad, from bumbling to capable. I was also fairly pleased that the mom could hold her own and didn't need any of the typical rescuing moms tend to lend themselves to in books of this sort. I was also pleased to see that there's more than a jot of humor to this story. There are overt physical gags, like the dad getting bitten by the snake and (my personal favorite) managing to light all the matches in the matchbox on fire at once. But there are subtler spoken gags as well, and a real family camaraderie and back and forth that makes you believe in these people. Interestingly, I found the sections with the humans far more interesting than the ones with the giants. As it should be.

And for the art? TenNapel has a distinctive style that reveals itself in sharp jaw lines and akimbo elbows. At the same time he knows how to keep a page interesting. Shadows and scenes seen from different angles appear alongside variegated panel sizes and consistently interesting layouts. There's a controlled messiness to TenNapel's style that serves him here. With this book he can use his style to bring forth the dirt and grime of the outdoors. Indeed I think he'd have a harder time if he ever set one of his stories in a pristine, clean, robotic world. His is an art of well-ordered chaos, on the edge of going entirely insane. Nothing bad really happens to our heroes in this book, but you are never in any doubt that it would take surprisingly little to change that fact. The lure of TenNapel's art is that it verges on the insane.

Actually, the book that this would pair the best with might be Don Wood's own island-related graphic novel Into the Volcano. In both cases you have reluctant boy protagonists coming into their own to save their family members. Both also have a strange reluctance to trust an island. Wood, because they can always blow up or emit poison gas or try to kill you some other way. TenNapel because they might one day just up and leave with you still on them. On its own, however, Bad Island provides the mix of storytelling and action, heart and excitement, which many a graphic novel strives for and few actually attain. There's substance to this puppy. Something that sticks long after you've read it. And for many a kid, that'll be enough. Definitely check it out.

Helen Joy Davidman (1915-1960) was an American poet and writer, a radical communist, and an atheist until her conversion to Christianity in the late 1940s. Her first husband was the writer William Lindsay Gresham. Her second marriage was to the writer and Oxford don, C. S. Lewis.

Joy separated from her first husband and moved to England in 1954 with her two sons, David and Douglas Gresham. Lewis at first regarded her as an agreeable intellectual companion and personal friend, and it was at least overtly on this level that he agreed to enter into a civil marriage contract with her so that she could continue to live in the UK. It then became clear that she had terminal bone cancer, and the relationship developed to the point that they sought a Christian marriage in 1956. She recovered briefly, but eventually succumbed to cancer. Lewis wrote "A Grief Observed" in response to her death.

Who was the outspoken, dynamic woman named Joy who became C. S. Lewis's wife? The popular movie "Shadowlands" tells part of the story, but the woman who came from New York with her two children was still an enigma, until Lewis expert and archivist Lyle Dorsett undertook to look into the life and character of this unusual woman. Originally published in 1988, I found this story of the life of this extraordinary woman to be an ideal compliment to George Sayer's biography of C.S.Lewis originally entitled "Jack: C.S.Lewis and His Times" (1988) reprinted by Hodder in 2005 as "Jack: A Life of C.S.Lewis."

"Joy Davidman was born into a Jewish family in New York City, 1915. Both sets of grandparents were immigrants who practiced their religion, Joy's father did not, in fact he brought up his children harshly, insisted that they follow his atheism, and put great pressure on his children to achieve. As Joy was very bright, beyond her years, with an exceptionally high IQ, she gained entry to University at an early age and was writing poetry and short stories from the start.

"These early chapters did not describe a particularly likeable young woman, by the time she married at twenty-seven, she and her husband were committed members of the Communist Party but both were aware there was something missing in their lives.

"The story continues, telling how both Joy and Bill became Christians, Bill to drop away, becoming an alcoholic, Joy to grow nearer to Christ, drawing great comfort from the writings of C.S.Lewis.

Lyle W. Dorsett is a Professor at the Beeson School of Divinity at Samford University. He is a former faculty member of Wheaton College, and a bestselling author. His books include "A Passion for Souls: The Life of D. L. Moody" and "The Essential C. S. Lewis." Lyle and his wife, Mary, founded Christ for Children International, a mission to economically impoverished children in Mexico.

Out of the Shadows (II)

This was the first full-length biography ever published of Joy Davidman, who, though a noteworthy poet and author in her own right, would be most remembered as the wife of British scholar and author C.S. Lewis. The story of their marriage and of her tragic, premature death from cancer was already familiar to me from a number of sources, mostly focused on Lewis; yet I knew only generalities concerning Davidman's earlier life in America. AND GOD CAME IN does much to correct this and is built on extensive research into her many letters, the reminiscences of friends and surviving family, and her own writings. The endnotes at the back of this new edition thus span seventeen pages!

Dorsett himself is not a flawless writer, but overall I found his work here an engaging and very helpful new perspective. The hardships (even those somewhat self-inflicted) of Davidman's younger years, and her once deeply ingrained biases, cast her later Christian faith in a fresh and more impressive light.

The first edition of this work was also the source of many elements portrayed in the original 1985 BBC-TV rendering of SHADOWLANDS -- details I had encountered nowhere else and had long thought apocryphal. However, while that interpretation was far superior to the better-known 1993 cinematic version, Dorsett, in a new Preface, here expresses his dissatisfaction with either film's depiction of the Lewis/Davidman relationship, and takes the opportunity of the book's reissue to set the record straight on various points.

Although this story is deeply moving -- of two very different individuals who found (or were Led to) each other at a time when they needed the love and support their friendship and eventual marriage would provide -- Dorsett is correct in asserting that Joy deserves better than to have her own life's record 'obscured by the shadow of C.S. Lewis'. I rather think Jack would have been the first to agree, and to applaud this admirable attempt at re-introducing the world to a remarkable woman of ardent faith yet full humanity (with all the complexity which that implies).

Its a God Thing

C. S. Lewis was perhaps the best known Christian writer of the 20th century. You would be hard pressed to believe this love story. The journey that led Joy Davidman (a Jewish, communist, Christian) to become the wife of the confirmed bachelor, Christian, academician C. S Lewis is well worth the read. Lewis entitled the story of his awakening as a Christian "Surprised by Joy". This improbable love story may well be subtitled "Surprised by Love".

This book is incredibly helpful on so many different levels.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to step up his/her game to the next level. It is very well-written, very motivating and inspiring.
One of the things I especially like about "How To Become A SuperHero", is that it gives you a clear-cut, well organized, step by step plan to becoming a better (stronger, smarter, better developed, better educated, more spiritual, more successful, happier, etc...) YOU.

After reading the book, if you don't see instant improvement in your goals, whatever they may be, you didn't really do the homework and exercises the book provides you on the journey it is helping you through

Don't get fooled by the comic book playfulness of the approach in the book: there is a lot to digest here ranging from business matters (i.e. marketing, promoting yourself, planning, etc. ) to psychology (what is holding you back, how to break out of your limitations, etc... ) to spirituality (i.e. social abilities, emotional intelligence, becoming better connected to your deeper purpose, etc.)
The light-hearted approach has a meaning: while you are accomplishing all these great, important things you set out to achieve, you can as well have fun doing so.

The author, Sage Michael, also has a fantastic website that does a great job in further guiding and coaching the readers of the book to achieving their life's purpose and mission.

I can tell you this: Before reading this book, I never made that specific connection before, but you do indeed feel a bit like a SuperHero when you see great things happening in your life, when you see yourself grow and you see yourself really contributing things of value to society and your community through focused effort and dedication.

This book is Super amazing, Super powerful, Super inspirational, and So much more. I learned essential things about taking control of my life and becoming the best I could be. I loved it so much, Im planning to get a tattoo with a quote from one of the opening chapters.
I wouldnt say you wont be able to put it down once you start it - you will be, because you'll be out there, actively building yourSelf to the very best you can become. Its more than a book, it becomes a way a life. One that once you start living, you'll wonder why you havent been living this way all along.

This book just about saved my life. Really.

I stumbled across this book during a difficult time in my life (death of a close friend, abusive relationship, bad work situation) and I credit it to helping me rise out of the most depressed point in my life. The exercises and tasks inside helped me focus my mind, accomplish some of the coolest things I’ve ever done in my life, rise up and address the problems in my life, and ultimately made me a better person. I really can’t stress enough how much this book helped me when I was an absolute mess. If you are struggling or suffering at all, buy this book and follow it. It *will* help.

Now onto the actual content…..

Part 1 begins with a look at what it means to be a superhero and an overview of the steps to becoming one. It introduces the three types of superhero- Freelancer, Freerunner, and Flyer- and asks you to choose to become one in order to develop your powers (of course you can mix it up- I started as a Freerunner but am now working on being a developing Flyer and Freelancer skills). The book then looks at the different types of moral codes and has you write out your values to discover what your own moral alignment is. The rest of Part 1 involves writing out your mission, vision, mythology, identity….and more! Expect to spend some time writing everything out, and be sure to actually do it- this helps you focus and solidify your commitment.

Parts 2 and 3 are where the real fun begins- Superhero Bootcamp and powers! Bootcamp starts with exercises to help you master your mind, body, and spirit. This forms the foundation for you to develop your actual powers. Do them. It also includes a workout plan adapted from Navy SEAL training, but states you can use whatever training routine you enjoy. Personally, I like to lift heavy things more than I like to run, so that’s what I do ☺
In the section on Superpowers, there are “Core” Powers for all superheroes, and then specific powers for the three different types. Each power includes a description and the steps to achieving it. They are diverse and includes reflex training, memory power, athleticism, time management, languages, hypnotism, lie detection, martial arts, weapons, survival, quantum healing, and Chinese medicine.

I’ll leave the rest of the book as a surprise.

And seriously, buy this book and use it. It helped me build my confidence, gave me purpose, and I had many amazing experiences. I took martial arts classes, survival courses, learned how to shoot a gun, and even flew a plane. I found my Professor X in my amazing yoga teacher and am learning all the crazy spiritual and transformative aspects of yoga. I met the love of my life (who is, no kidding, a real-life superhero) while at a parkour gym.

One more thing- the author, Sage Michael, is awesome. I reached out to him to ask a question about his other offerings and before I knew it, he and his wife were helping me out with my own business and goals. How often do you even hear from an author, let alone get personal advice and guidance?
