This collection features more than 230 reproductions of the finest pen-and-ink drawings by more than 100 artists during the heyday of the illustrated magazine, from 1881 to 1938. In addition to images from popular magazines, the survey features illustrations from newspapers and books that recapture a broad range of expressions of artistic imagination and experimentation. The compilation includes an informative Introduction by designer and art historian Fridolf Johnson, which traces the history and development of pen-and-ink illustration and chronicles America's richly varied illustrative tradition and artistic heritage.

A Nice Selection of Drawings

This is actually a nice selection of pen and ink drawings exhibiting a wide variety of styles. Historically it goes from Reginald Birch to Rockwell Kent. There are good images on every page, many full-page in size so they are useful to the budding pen and ink artist. Charles Dana Gibson's girls -- the gifted James Montgomery Flagg -- cartoons of Oscar F. Howard and Charles F. Peters -- the old West by Frederic Remington -- fantasy of John R. Neil -- many more riches to be discovered and enjoyed!

pen and ink. It is going to be a long process for me!!It amazes me the beauty in pen and ink drawings!!I won't be great at it; but I enjoy trying!Iwas happy to find this book on Amazon.com.

Treasury of American Pen-and-Ink Illustrations...A great find!!!

This by chance was found on the Amazon Dot Com Nation as I checked over someone who really liked this book...but was new to pen/ink and had a hard time accepting this book for trying to master the art of pen/ink drawing...I was lucky to review what I saw and ordered the book without hesitation...It's a great reference book and has much about the styles and illustrations during this time period (1881-1938). What a great find...!! Some wonderful history runs through each illustrated page...I'm still submerged in reviewing some of these pen and ink artists within these pages then surf the internet to find out more of said artist.
Great book! One I will treasure for many years.

money can not buy you love...

Eve's Ransom is a short (125 pages) novel concerning the efforts of a young man to, in effect, buy the affection of a mysterious young woman. Actually, he really is just trying to help "a friend in need". But the young woman leads him on, accepts his money, and in the end ... well, you know how these things turn out.
Yes, the story is simple. However any material from George Gissing is an interesting read, especially for those interested in the more social aspects of Victorian society. Money and greed are also common themes, and Mr. Gissing makes keen observations in these areas that are true even today.
Eve's Ransom is a must read for George Gissing fans. For those who have not read any of George Gissing's novels I recommend first reading New Grub Street. It is unfortunate Eve's Ransom is no longer printed. No, it's not George Gissing's best novel. But it is still a worthy read.
Finally for those who like the "man falls in love with Ms. Wrong"-type of novels, especially those set in Victorian England, I recommend reading Basil by Wilkie Collins.

Gissing In Brief Form

This novella, at 125 pages, contains many of the trademark Gissing facets: introspective, thoughtful people struggling to balance very human impulses with a sense of social responsibility. The protagonist wants to be brusque about himself, giving short shrift to his more developed morality and admonishing himself for his all-too-mortal desires. Circumstances have been difficult in his life, and temptations and depression always flirt with him as he navigates through a career and singlehood. Amidst a small circle of friends he gets to know someone he thinks is his distaff equivalent, a woman who has faced struggles but keeps her head above water with pride. Each of the primary players faces choices that are difficult. The story does not push forward with an energetic plotline, but rather respresents a character study of young adults in romance and friendships. Not Gissing's strongest work, but a fine and rare selection for fans if they can locate a copy.

A little mystery at the perfect wedding.

This is rather light fare. However, there are some surprising twists. The author has managed to create a little suspense at what should be the perfect wedding. The bride and groom are very much in love. The bride is well-grounded and the groom is just a peach of a guy. Her best friend is an expert wedding planner, too. Why would anything go wrong? Weddings are very stressful enough, but someone is trying to sabotage this one. The reason is not what you think. I had fun reading this book and trying to solve the mystery. I like to read in bed. This is a good book for that or a young adult reader and at the beach etc.

I didn’t read book one in this series but it was good as a stand alone book as well.

Madison is getting married and anyone who reads my blog knows I love a good wedding book. Of course if things went perfectly there’d be no book so the trials of her difficult family make for great conflicts. The book is easy to read, and goes by quickly (I even ignored my children in the few hours it took me to read it – that’s when you know it’s good).

I gave this book 4 Stars.

Madison and Cole are obviously in love, and planning a wedding. Lucky enough for Madison her best friend Sienna is her wedding planner and things should go perfectly until her Grandmother insists her two cousins Ellie and Stephy help out. Considering these cousins aren’t her favorite or closest relatives there’s no surprise when her wedding starts seeming sabotaged.

This is a true chick lit book, the characters are real, likable and funny. Their turmoil is ongoing, leading up to an ultimately happy ending, even though the reader can’t find it through the ups and downs until the very end. This book was great and I’ll definitely go back and read Melissa’s previous books.

What I Loved:
-Madison and Cole are a great, fun, funny couple who I loved becoming friends with.
-Ellie and Stephy are perfect as characters you love to hate!
-This book is a quick, fun, true chick lit read.

What I didn’t Love:
-That I’d never read the first book in the series!

What I thought of the Cover:
-What a cute, chick lit-ish cover! It’s what drew me to the book for sure!

Did I add a Book Boyfriend to my list?
-eh… I loved Cole but I don’t know if he mesmerized me like some do.

Wedding Haters is an entertaining chick lit / romantic comedy wedding themed story that will keep you in stitches!

In Wedding Haters, the second book of the Event To Remember series, author Melissa Baldwin weaves a sassy tale that follows the wedding planning trials and tribulations of bride Madison Wales. Told in the first person narrative, the reader follows Madison and her best friend and wedding planner Sienna Harris as Madison's perfect bridal plans are sabotaged by her meddling Grandmother and evil cousins Ellie and Stephy. Can Madison and Sienna save her wedding dreams and get it back on track, or should Madison and Cole go the easy route and elope?

This was such a fun and lighthearted book to read, it had a great mixture of family drama, humor, romance, and a touch of mystery that kept me engaged and laughing as I followed the unfolding of the craziness of Madison's wedding planning debacle. Anyone who has been down the wedding planning route can relate to the craziness of the event, and how the best laid plans can unexpectedly go awry, especially when meddling family members add their two cents in the mix. I loved the witty dialogue and dramatic interactions between the characters; the wonderful friendship between Madison, Sienna, and Abby; and her sweet romantic relationship with Cole. I love reading wedding themed chick lit stories, and this one had just the right amount of entertaining drama and humor intertwined with an intriguing mystery twist that easily earns two thumbs up!

Wedding Haters is a fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable chick lit story that will leave a smile on your face.

About the Author
Jonathan McMillan is a pseudonym. Behind it stand two authors, both experienced in the world of economics and finance. One works in the investment bank division of a global bank. He is a financial expert who loves nothing more than digging through balance sheets, system flowcharts, and transaction data. In his role, he has gained firsthand insights into the workings of the financial centers of London and New York. To protect the identity of this author, The End of Banking is published under a pseudonym.

The other author has chosen an academic path. Always eager to learn, he earned two bachelor's degrees, one in economics and one in international relations. He holds an M.Phil. in economics from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in economics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich. In his research, he investigated the impact of banking and banking regulation on macroeconomic stability and welfare. He is now an economics editor at Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the Swiss newspaper of record.

One of the best non-fiction books I have read in a while

One of the best non-fiction books I have read in a while. I felt like this book provided me with an easy-to-follow introduction to banking, an overview of the important (and beneficial) role banks have played in the past and an explanation of why this is not the case anymore today. By the time the author proposes a new financial architecture in the latter parts of the book, the fundamental flaws in the current fnancial system have become more than apparent. Interesting, informative and a real eye opener.

The author begins by succintly laying out what exactly traditional banks do. This first part is somewhat technical at times (bank balance sheets and the dangers of bank runs are explained in some detail) but the explanations were easy to follow and lay the groundwork for the remainder of the book. The second part then directly builds on these concepts to show how, following the digital revolution, bank and non-bank institutions could suddenly mutiply their balance sheets, leading to the rise of shadow banking. At this point the financial crisis of 2007-08 is discussed and it feels like, given what one has just learned, it was bound to happen. The author then goes on to elaborate on the problems faced by regulators post-2008 and why their attempts to improve the financial system are bound to fail (too big too fail, boundary problem of financial regulation cannot be fixed with traditional methods).

The last part of the book then moves on from a description of the status quo to a suggestion of what should replace the current financial system. This is surely the more controversial part of the book. While the descriptive part is a very clear exposition of facts which are hard to argue with, the last part proposes a sweeping re-organisation which takes some time to digest and think through. Nevertheless, the author is extremely convincing in pointing out that incremental regulatory changes to the current system are unlikely to solve the problem. One is left with no choice but to take the author's proposals serious. I finished the book looking forward to a hopefully much more serious public debate about the future of banking than we have it at the moment. And this book has very much to offer to such a debate!

A MUST READ – for everybody interested in creating a modern, stable and just financial system

This books analyzes banking from its beginning through its development in the industrial age until is corruption in the digital age. Even for novice to the industry – like myself – it explains in an easy but concise, very well argued and convincing manner how banking got corrupted thanks to the digitalization of our world. It demonstrates how the digitalization allowed for the rise of Shadow banking – the Achilles’ heel of today’s financial system – which leaded to the financial crisis in 2007. And it shows how – even with the best intention at heart – today’s regulation is unable to prevent future – and potentially even worse - crises as BANKING SIMPLY GOT OUT OF CONTROL.

And – other than so many other books - this book does not stop by pointing out the faults and defects of the financial system but also offers a solution to the problem. With a provokingly simple rule it can be possible to end banking as we know it and transform the system into a modern, stable and just system of modern finance. By objectively analyzing existing proposition and theories about reforms in banking and connecting the advantages of those theories with emerging business models, such as bitcoins and peer-to-peer landing, this books convinced me that a modern and stable financial system can be achieved!

"The end of banking" takes no prisoners!

With one book, I understood the essence of banking, the fundamental problem of banking, and how it could be solved once and for all. Clear, rational, and free of ideology, it takes you straight to the core of the problem which turns out not to be that complicated once you grasp it. If you work in a bank, you should probably read it now. I must admit, I am a fan, and I highly recommend this book to everyone!
The only thing is that the book may be too clever to achieve its aim. Since the author does not rely on any exaggerated imagery or blunt argument, it may not draw a the political following that it deserves. Therefore, I hope that enough smart people read it, who are attracted by its sharpness and enjoy to base their political views on rational arguments. That way, we will perhaps see one day the necessary political force to really establish alternatives to banking.
Certainly, one of the most important books I have read in my life.

A Good Old Fashioned Knee Slapper

I have been a fan of Larry Shue's work since I was in a performance of "The Foreigner". In anticipation of seeing a live performance, I read "The Nerd". My greatest objection is that the title is somewhat misleading. This flaw aside, this may be the funniest play that I have ever read.

Willum Cubbert is one of the most promising architects in Terre Haute, Indiana. He is also a Vietnam veteran that owes his life to a man named Rick Steadman. In the vein of houseguest that wear out their welcome, Steadman may be the most obnoxious. With his over the top tactlessness and inability to take social cues, it takes less than a week for even the man whose life he saved in Vietnam to want Rick gone.

Shue is masterful in his wit and skill for placing jokes in social contexts. The surprise twist at the end makes for an extra delight in reading this play. With his talent, it is remarkable that Shue is not better known.

Revenge on the Nerd

Larry Shue is a gifted playwright who can deftly mix laugh-out-loud comedy with social criticism. This was best evidenced in his near-farcical work "The Foreigner". His comedy is put to excellent display in "The Nerd", the story of a man trying to politely get rid of a guest who has more than outstayed his welcome, if he was ever welcome to begin with.

Willum Cubbert, now an architect, was wounded in Vietnam and rescued by Rick Steadman, a man he was never able to meet. But since Rick saved his life, Willum feels indebted to him and offers him a place to stay should he ever need it. On Willum's thirty-fourth birthday, Rick shows up, and turns out to be a nightmare, for he is completely inept when it comes to socializing, and even more so when it comes to being a human being anyone would want to have anything to do with. Willum's life is excessively complicated by Rick's extended visit, and along with his friends they engage in some wild antics to make Rick leave for good.

"The Nerd" is fast paced and often laugh-out-loud funny. Larry Shue mangages to imbue his characters with vivid life despite the shortness of his works. What makes "The Nerd" work is the conundrum that Willum finds himself in by feeling indebted to and horrified by Rick at the same time, a situation that anyone could recognize themselves in. "The Nerd" is a comic masterpiece which I am looking forward to seeing performed live.

A literary and performance masterpiece!

This is easilly my favorite play ever. Last year, I directed it for a Student Directed Production at my high school and had a lot of success and strong audience response. I had people walk up to me hoping for more performances because they had laughed SO HARD. Some of my closest friends actually said they had fallen off their seats laughing. Involving a small cast of 7, this production creates what reviewers say is "one of the funniest plays ever written". The plot begins with architect Willum Cubbert getting a surprise birthday party from his girlfriend Tansy and his room mate and play-critic, Axel. From the beginning, the characters are establishes, but the plot takes a little while to catch onto. Tansy talks about leaving Willum for a job opportunity in Washington because she feels like she's spinning her tires with Willum. Finally, Willum's boss, Waldgrave, his wife, Clelia, and son, Thor, arrive. From this family's entrance, they're a comedy routine on their own! Waldgrave is edgy and very high strung, while Clelia presents herself as a very calm and collected special ed. teacher...while their son, Thor, is a hellian! :) After a while, a man who once saved Willum's life in Vietnam, shows up on the answering machine. And this man, named Rick Steadman, shows up, and is a bumbling oaf and a complete NERD! All in all, Rick drives EVERYONE nuts! Clelia smashes dishes to relieve stress, Waldgrave screams and pitches a fit, and Thor locks himself in the bedroom. After a LOT of comedic setups, the Waldgrave family exits with muddy clothes, soaked shoes, and a psychologically messed up delinquent. Willum, Tansy, and Axel result in constantly being driven up the wall by Rick. So, Rick decides to stay...permanantly. Willum doesn't feel as if he could just tell Rick to leave, so he stays and DRIVES HIM UP THE WALL! After dedicated attempts at ridding themselves of Rick, they decide the only way it's possible, is by performing bizarre Pagan rituals. After dancing around the room, Willum, Tansy, and Axel all realize that Rick is ENJOYING himself! Finally, Rick joins the chant and shouts for them to throw cottage cheese out the window. They do. And Waldgrave reenters the apartment with a pile of cottage cheese covering him. In the end, Willum is fired completely because of Rick. And that is when Willum decides to tell the schmuck to leave. And in a very awkward way, the nerd makes his exit. And Willum, now jobless, decides to take a job offer in Washington, so he can remain with Tansy. A love setup was caused by a secret plan by Axel and the actor who had played Rick Steadman the entire time. Willum may go to Washington realizing that he's now jobless, but as "Rick" says "by that time, I'm sure he'll be so happy he'll forget to be mad" and the curtain closes. There is no perfect way to review this, due to all the humour within the dialogue. I simply will say, BUY THIS! YOU WILL READ IT, and if you're a theater lover, you'll read it again and again! It's the best! All around, it isn't incredibly deep in meaning, but involves a very simple and cute love story.

Dark and Gritty S&M

Warning: this is not your momma's fluffy glitterkink. This is skirting the edge of dub-con S&M. There is no Happily Ever After. Both of the characters--Kurt and Luc--are a few floors short of a skyscraper. In fact, one might wonder just why these two men are even together sexually. And yet they are and each time the intensity gets ratcheted up even higher. They seem addicted to each other.

For a short story, Poison packs on hell of a wallop. I want to know more about Kurt and Luc and yet their brief interactions clued me in as to their fierce atraction. Kurt is that wonderfully mouthy submissive who needs to fight. Luc is the dominant who knows how to give it to him. And yes, it's just sex--sweaty, dirty, no-holds barred sex. And sometimes, that just hits the spot.

What a fantasy this presented! Although I am a straight woman, something about this "homo-erotica" just does it. Its so easy to get lost in these stories. I do wish they were longer, by the end I am begging for more. (Irony?) This is a must read!

Good Writing, But A Bit Much For My Taste

I picked up this short book and was warned of it's graphic content and the nature of the book from a sexual standpoint. Being opened minded I wanted to give it a chance. What I loved about the book was the writing. Jane Bled can write. She goes a great job creating tension between her characters and Kurt is overwhelmed by the mysterious individual he meets on a subway car. He's faced like all of us with doing things he probably shouldn't be doing, but the urge is so strong that it makes it nearly impossible to resist. I always look for believable characters when reading a book. Kurt and his love, or should I say lust interest are quite believable. The realism is there all the way and I'm sure the next book features the same quality writing.

If you're not comfortable with BDSM, and graphic erotica, this is probably not the book for you. I probably wont continue with the series because this isn't quite my taste. I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys graphic erotica and BDSM; and is comfortable with their own sexuality. Poison is a quick read and can be read in 30 minutes to an hour, which is another plus of the book, as it doesn't drag on with a lot of useless description that has no purpose for the. The story is well thought out and the poems before each section kind of give you something to think about before you read on.

This is a load of junk! The title of the book listed is the 2nd edition, well guess what I got, the first edition of some ratty old book! I didn't get a paper copy of the 2nd edition AS THE ORDER DESCRIBED.
