With more than 25 years’ experience photographing nudes, Trampe has developed an eye for what makes a portrait resonate with viewers. You’ll get tips for choosing dramatic indoor and outdoor locations that will serve as the perfect backdrop and set the mood in the image. You will also learn how to create or find great natural light that shows texture and contours the model’s body for added appeal. Posing subjects to coax curves and highlight the subject’s physical aspects is of obvious import in this genre, and Trampe teaches you to help conceptualize a strategy that not only makes the subject look good but, in many cases, even plays off of another shape in the overall image. He also teaches you when and how adding fabric or props will further your image, and when less is more. About the Author
Stan Trampe lived most of his life in St. Louis, MO, moving to San Diego in 2012. In 1987, at the age of 56, he became inspired with serious black and white fine-art nude photography after a week-long workshop with Robert Farber in Northern California. He began working with digital imaging in 2000, and within a year, abandoned his darkroom and converted to all digital capture and production. He continues to photograph almost exclusively in black & white, including infrared. Stan is a self-taught photographer, and gained valuable insights during several workshops with artists Joyce Tennyson, Ken Marcus, Jerry Uelsmann, Michael Kenna and Sally Mann (all exceptional darkroom printers). Stan’s work is entirely fine-art nude and a few portraits.

His passion to create fine-art nude images continues to this day and at 83 years young, he hopes that it will continue for many more years. His models are his inspiration and he continues to photograph a minimum of two sessions per week. Stan’s preference is to photograph one model for more than one year; doing this builds a remarkable rapport that improves the work. The model and Stan are frequently co-creators; as a group he finds that models are very creative.

Stan admits to sometimes being overwhelmed by what he sees: a model at a stream in the early morning, fog lifting, her form touched by the first muted rays of sunlight, or in his studio with touching expressions of light. Stan quips that his models forgive the occasional tears that he sheds.

Lovely and Endearing

I loved this book and I learned something about photography by reading it but its value really isn't in its instruction or in its fine art images. the real value for me were the stories that accompanied each image. the author told me about his models, about their travels together, and the circumstances of their shoots and this I found to be the most compelling aspect of the book.

Stan's book is a feast for the eyes. His nudes in black and white are stunning. Like 'Playboy' you can buy this for the articles and enjoy the pix. I've been around the bend a few times with photography and Stan still taught me a few tricks. If you like beautiful black and white nudes and like learning a thing or two about how to create your own, 'Fine Art Nudes' may belong on your book shelf as well.

A Fine Collection of Essays

Sadly, I doubt that anyone who is not a libertarian or conservative will endeavor to read this collection of essays. Each essay is a worthwhile read - that each is only about a dozen or so pages make this book an excellent choice for folks with small windows of time in which to read. The essays do not shy away from the link between our Western civilization and its Greek and Judeo-Christian roots. And thankfully so. To do otherwise would be to deny our foundation, which seems to be at the core of modern progressive liberalism.

Absolutely Stunning Material on Matisse

This is a sensational set of books. The Barnes Foundation was created by a doctor who began collecting art about 100 years ago. He built a fabulous collection. Among his treasures were 59 paintings by the French artist Henri Matisse. This three volume set is jammed with information about how Dr. Barnes began collecting art, how he bought his first Matisse when he went to Paris and obtained it from Gertrude Stein, and how he created his magnificent collection which is now worth billions. Every single Matisse painting in the collection is shown. The illustrations are eye candy. There's the back story for every painting. We find out when Matisse painted each one, what they were about, and how and when they were obtained. We learn about the collecting philosophy that Barnes employed and how that changed over the years. Barnes got to know Matisse and he commissioned the artist to paint a mural called "The Dance." You can see a photo on the cover of the artist working on the mural. The story of that mural's creation takes up an entire volume. There are hundreds of gorgeous illustrations, photos, etc. This is a fabulous set of books!

About the Author

Dr. Larry Turyn is a professor of mathematics and statistics at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he has taught for 31 years. He earned degrees from Brown University and the Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. He has also been a Fellow and sessional instructor at the University of Calgary. At Wright State University he has developed several courses in engineering mathematics, differential equations, and applied analysis. Dr. Turyn has authored 26 articles in the fields of differential equations, eigenvalue problems, and applied mathematics.

There has got to be a better option out there

Absolutely terrible. This book tries to cover too much. It rushes through topics with few examples and vague theorems. The practice/HW problems rarely apply to the topics covered in the section.

Not only is the content flawed, but the book itself is poorly constructed. Mine had its spine start failing within a month, this is mostly due to the size of the book and it being absurdly thick. It should be split into at least 2 volumes that cover the material better.

Really dislike this textbook. Not only is it 20 lbs, it is confusing and just incomprehensible. There are no solutions in the back. For my class I googled notes from other college adv math courses to learn the material.

I have found the questions in this book, and the others which accompany it, to be the closest thing to the real exam outside the NCEES practice exam available.

I think it's just a matter of time before these books become the go to study references for the FE electrical exam.

Philip D. Plowright is Associate Professor of Architectural Design, History and Theory at Lawrence Technological University. He is a founder of the systems-based think tank, synchRG, a registered architect, and Managing Editor of Enquiry/The ARCC Journal of Architectural Research. He has published and lectured widely around issues of meaning, interpretation and process in architectural design.

It's a must read

As an interior designer and history enthusiast pursuing a M.Arch, this book was recommended to me and I am so glad I bought it. The concepts and ideas helped me transition my interior design mind into an architectural way of thinking. It was a great supplement to read and reference during a studio course because it connected different ways of researching, as well as how those ways can be utilized in projects for meaningful design. I appreciated the deeply rooted historical context - not only was it educational on the history of architecture, but it provided a connection to the "why" part of architectural design. This book connected the dots for me in so many ways. Before reading this book, I primarily used reading and writing as forms of research and context, however, the examples in the book take research further. Now I find myself making diagrams in all my research papers! They are awesome! I anticipate using this book as a reference for years to come. Definitely buy it if you can; it's worth a lot more than it costs.

Wish I had this when I started architecture!

I really wish I had something like this when I first started architecture school. I have since obtained a Master of Architecture and I find that basic principles and concepts that I have had to dig for over the course of 9 years are clearly laid out in this treatise. It is not a "how to do architecture" book, but a great guide in the individuals own journey in architectural education.

Every first year architecture student should own a copy of this book. It lays out in a clear and understandable way the basic principles of architectural thinking and process methodology. Furthermore, the author does a good job of demystifying the erroneous notion that architecture is an arbitrary and strictly intuitive discipline. At the end of reading this book, the student will be able to navigate through various frameworks (Concept based, Type based, and Force based) and be able to deploy divergent and convergent thinking streams. Using the book as a guide in early design studios will help students discover which methodology is best for them in working through creative issues. Definitively something to add to the library.
