The author of Baseball in April (1990) offers 13 more domestic reversals of fortune. Javier snaps a picture of Angel in the shower and threatens ``Blackmail''; Alex's ``First Job'' turns into disaster when he accidentally sets a neighbor's fence afire; Robert almost botches his one line in ``The School Play'' (about the Donner party); Jose challenges new classmate Estela to a game of racquetball--which he's never played--and is wiped out; flying is not the peak experience Araceli expects when she signs up for a ``Nickel-a-Pound Plane Ride,'' etc. As always, Soto shows that the concerns and triumphs of Latino children are no different from anyone's, and though he respects his characters, their misadventures are treated with a light touch--vignettes rather than life-changing incidents. Also as usual, the narrative is sprinkled with Spanish words and idioms, defined at the back- -excellent flavoring but, for many, extra work. A great book told from a refreshingly different perspective

It is so very difficult to find books that Latino youth can relate to. The short stories in this book give the reader a glimpse into life in immigrant communities without harping on problems. I brought a copy of this book into my sixth grade class last year and it changed many of my students' perspectives on reading. Many of them read a chapter book for the first time in their lives, and continued reading for pleasure for the rest of the year. I will never forget the looks of surprise on their faces when I read a chapter out loud. They were in shock that there were books in which the characters talked like their families and dealt with subject matter they encountered in their lives. They gobbled up (and fought over) every Gary Soto book I brought into the classroom from then on, and eventually became interested in reading a wide variety of books. Their end of year exam scores improved dramatically, and I believe that at least some of this improvement was because of this book.

While there are some good children's books that touch on the experiences of immigrants and Chicanos, they usually just include characters named "Pedro" and toss in a few Spanish words. By unapologetically including Chicano slang and themes common in immigrant communities, this book validates the existence of young Latinos/Chicanos/Mexicanos and gives them a reason to WANT to read. While it does not fill it completely, it begins to fill a tremendous gap that exists in children's literature. Every 5th grade+ literature teacher working with Latino children should definitely have at least one copy in their classroom libraries. Even non-Latinos should enjoy Soto's entertaining method of telling stories.

Recently, I gained the privilege to read a book that was written by Gary Soto. The book that I read was entitled, Local News. Throughout this short book, Gary describes 11 different situations that are common for teenagers growing up in Hispanic neighborhoods. I will give a brief, yet detailed description of five of my favorite stories.
Chapter #1: Blackmail Blackmail was about a dispute between two teenage brothers. The setting takes place in a primarily Hispanic neighborhood located in California. Angel, who was the younger brother, found himself being picked on by his older brother named Javier. (Javier's nickname was Weasel) One day while Angel was taking a shower, Weasel snuck into the bathroom and took a picture of Angel, who obviously was bare-naked. Weasel threatened to show the picture to all of the girls at school if he did not give him $20.00. Angel, who was extremely angry yelled, `You punk, I'm going to get you!' His threat was worthless though. His older brother had absolutely no fear of him. Angel was very nervous because he didn't have $20.00 to give him, nor would he want to waste that much money on such a stupid joke. Finally, when Weasel realized that Angel wasn't capable of paying the ransom, he forced him to do his chores instead. Although Angel resented doing his brother's chores, he accepted the job. In the end, Weasel began to feel sorry for his younger brother and gave him the picture back.
Chapter #3: First Job
This chapter was about a 13-year-old boy named Alex. The setting took place on a hot summer day. Alex, who was the main character, had an older brother and sister and one younger brother. Both of his older siblings had jobs and were making money, which made Alex jealous. One day, Alex was asked to rake and burn some leaves for a woman named Mrs. Martinez. She offered him one dollar therefore he accepted the job. After Alex was finished raking the leaves in a pile, he lit a match and started the pile on fire. Just then, he realized that he had left his younger brother alone at home. Therefore, he decided to run home to make sure he was content. While he was away from the fire, it spread to Mrs. Martinez's deck. This event added some suspense to the story. When Alex returned to her house, a neighbor was already there and had the fire under control. Due to the fire, Mrs. Martinez was very angry and refused to pay Alex for the job. Unfortunately, that was Alex's first experience of having a job.
Chapter #4: El radio This chapter was about two teenage girls who had a small party together. The event took place in Patricia's home on a Friday night; her parents were not home. The other character, who was named Melinda, came over to listen to the radio with Patricia. As the two girls listened to the radio, they started to act crazy. Consequently, they spilled a bucket of popcorn and made a mess. When their parents returned home they were angry with the two girls. Finally, the girls were able to cheer up their parents by doing something very unique. You will have to read the story to discover what happened. This chapter possessed an exiting theme because it described the friendship of two girls.
Chapter #5: Push-up Push-up was the name of Carmen's new kitten. Carmen was a young girl living in a Spanish-American community. Her new kitten was very cute and was always receiving the family's attention. That made their other cat jealous. Therefore, it always fought with Push-up. One day, Carmen brought her kitten to school with her to protect him from the other cat. I thought that was an extremely risky idea. Therefore, I feel that this story contained a high level of suspense. When she and her kitten arrived at school, she secretly placed it in the ball container. Carmen felt bad for the kitten and said, `It will be ok, it is for your own good.' As the day passed by, Carmen struggled keeping the kitten a secret. In order to learn what happened to her and her cat, I suggest that you read this story.
Chapter #10: Nickel-A-Pound Plane Ride The main character of this story was Araceli. Araceli was a twelve-year-old with skin the color of brown sugar. Her dream was to fly in an airplane. One day, she finally got her chance. When she climbed into the plane's passenger area, she noticed that the engine was very loud. Therefore, she became a little nervous. As the plane began to take off, she became even more nervous when it rocked back and forth. She gradually began to feel unsafe. After the ride was over, she realized that flying was not all that she hoped it would be. The theme of this story was sad. The setting was on a cold rainy day, which gave the story a gloomy effect. When Araceli realized that she did not like flying, I was disappointed because it was her dream to fly.
After reading Local News by Gary Soto, I now have a better understanding of what a typical teenager's life was like in Spanish-American communities. Although this book was simple and easy to read, I feel that I have benefited from reading it because Gary Soto did an outstanding job of displaying each character's styles and traits in their everyday environment. If you are interested in learning about Spanish-American communities, I recommend reading this book.

The book "local news": collection of stories," By Gary Soto was a very interesting book the story is like a Mexican language, but also English book.
The background is about a young family who argues and shared some love. The theme of the story takes place in the house, park, and different holidays. The biggest problem was that the two sons were always fighting and most of the time they did get along.
When you read every chapter of "local news" you will imagine pictures about the book.
If you love reading on family and adventure you will enjoy every chapter.

The book costs to much, uses archaic wording that will make you fall asleep. I had to Redo my formula calculations 3 times before I realized that MOST OF THE FORMULAS ARE WRONG IN THE BOOK! How can you publish a book about financial cost etc and the formulas are wrong!.

This attractive dictionary presents the details and styles of residential architecture in the United States through over 500 annotated drawings. Skibinski and Lam base these examples on magazine illustrations and measured drawings from the Historic American Buildings Survey. Particularly useful are the clearly delineated illustrations that focus on construction technology (the anatomy of a double-hung sash and a balloon frame building, for example). Carley's (The Backyard Book, LJ 5/1/88) text would have benefited from a more expansive discussion of regional variations in style and specific information with which to date buildings. While the most useful book of this type remains Virginia and Lee McAlester's Field Guide to American Houses (LJ 8/84), this dictionary, designed for use by homeowners and curious tourists, is a welcome addition to the field. This collection of detailed black-and-white drawings of houses and other domestic buildings (barns, garages, gazebos) is presented in 12 chapters arranged chronologically, from Native American dwellings to contemporary trends. Each chapter is introduced by one page of text, and additional comments accompany the illustrations. Each drawing is labeled with the names of various architectural details.

Several examples are provided for each time period. For example, seven drawings reflect Federal-style homes in the chapter on neoclassical styles. The section on prefab housing in the postwar chapter includes traditional kit structures as well as Quonset huts and mobile homes. Some drawings highlight special interior or exterior features: fireplaces, staircases, gates, and so on. A series of inserts called "anatomies" look at basic construction methods: trusses, double-hung sashes, log notching. Floor plans are often provided. One helpful feature is that common usage is included in parenthesis next to technical terms that accompany illustrations; for example, split-wood shingles are also defined as shakes, a thatched sun shelter is also identified as a ramada.

Intended for architecture students and design professionals, this book could also be used as a resource for secondary school American history units. The first chapter covers Native American dwellings such as Algonquin wigwams, Apache wikiups, Navaho hogans, and Tlingit plank houses, and chapter 8 deals with folk and frontier houses. The index includes all the terms used as labels.

A better choice for public and school collections is the Eyewitness Visual Dictionary of Buildings (Dorling Kindersley, 1992), which uses photographs as well as illustrations and spans all sorts of structures from ancient through modern times. Other visual dictionaries, such as the Macmillan Visual Desk Reference (1993) and What's What: A Visual Glossary of the Physical World (Hammond, 1981), also include sections on architecture that satisfy many browsing and general reference needs. However, as a specialized resource, Carley's unique graphic guide will be a welcome addition to architecture and design collections.

An Ambitious Field Guide to Domestic Architecture

Although the illustrations in this book are not as beautiful as the ones in Lester Walker's "American Homes", this book is very ambitious in its presentations. Many field guides to American homes concentrate solely on identifying a style. Usually, there are only a few brief descriptions of the architectural details that help define a style.

What makes "The Visual Diction of American Domestic Architecture" such a pleasure is the sheer ambition of its coverage. Not only are there detailed descriptions of building exteriors, there are also detailed desciptions of interior features. As an example, not many field guides detail interior framing plans or such important features like staircases and fireplaces. If that were not enough, there are also some representative floor plans.

I have been collecting field guides for a number of years and this is one of the best. If you want to go beyond picking out key features of a distinct architectural style and want to delve deeper into building details, this is the book for you. Highly recommended.

Very good illustrated guide to residential American architecture

This is a very good guide to residential architecture in the United States, particularly for students learning the vocabulary of cornices, mansard roofs, porticoes, etc. Every pages includes multiple black-and-white line drawings illustrating whole buildings and architectural details, and each line drawing is clearly labeled with all applicable terms. It also includes many floor plans that demonstrate the changes in American homes over the years.

This "dictionary" is not in the traditional dictionary format. It is instead organized chronologically, beginning with Native American dwellings and concluding with contemporary homes. However, there is an index for looking up specific terms, if you want to flip right to a (pictorial) definition. Text boxes provide additional information about architectural styles and details, along with some historical and geographical context.

For students of architecture, this should not be the only architectural dictionary in the collection, but I do recommend including it.

I guess it isn't an easy thing to compose an illustrative guide on such complicated and multilayered portion of Architecture as American domestic styles, but all are included here: easily recognizable types, details, even construction methods! Special thanks to the Illustrator: the pictures are neither "overillustrated" nor of too "academic" appearance - just restrained professional still artistic graphic. As an international Architect often working for an American architectural firm I will surely make use of it.

Thereafter he worked in the University of Helsinki with research visits to University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1995 he was appointed Professor of Zoology in the University of Turku. He was the President of Scandinavian Physiological Society in 1994-1996, and a member of National Research Council of Environment and Natural Resources in 1995-1997. He served as a Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 2000-2004, and was the director of the Center of Excellence in Evolutionary Genetics and Physiology (appointed by the Academy of Finland) in 2006-2011. He has been chief editor of Aquatic Toxicology since 2004 and subject (respiratory and comparative physiology) editor of Acta Physiologica since 1997. Presently he is editorial board member in four journals. His approximately 200 publications include a book on Vertebrate Red Blood Cells published by Springer and a review on Membrane Transport and the Control of Haemoglobin Oxygen Affinity in Physiological Reviews. He has reviewed grant applications to agencies from more than ten different countries, and served as an evaluator of academic positions in USA, Canada, U.K., Sweden, South Africa and Finland. More than 30 journals have used him as peer reviewer. His research interests lie in how environmental changes, particularly temperature, oxygen and toxicants, affect cellular functions especially in fish. An important aspect of research is environmental regulation of gene expression, for example how toxicants, oxygen and temperature changes affect transcription, translation and protein stability.

Concise and Practical Guide for Value Assessment

This is a wonderfully clear and simple guide for heath care professionals to understand and practically implement cost-effectivenss analyses and assess the value of a healthcare intervention, drug, or technology. I noticed this new third edition has many more tables and helpful figures compared to the previous version and there are lots examples and exercises with answers in the back. I highly recommend this book, and the methods are all in alignment with more advanced guidelines from the US Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine, Briggs, and Drummond. The University of Washington provides this book to many students as they learn to prioritize healthcare portfolios based on value.

As a student, this is a great resource!! It is well written, with clear concepts and real life examples. The exercises make it so the concepts stick in your brain, whereas the glossary is handy for reference. I use this book for class and for projects that I am working on. Better yet, I will use the techniques that I have learned for future employment opportunities, as cost-effective analysis is an essential methodology for any modern researcher.

More wonders of numbers

In a "Passion for Mathematics", Clifford Pickover takes up where he left off in his widely-acclaimed book "Wonders of Numbers." The passion in the title refers to the work of Ramanujan, a mathematician from India who startled the world with equations seemingly pulled from thin air. Ramanujan credited a goddess, Namagiri, for his inspiration. Thus, part of this work deals with the life and legacy of Ramanujan.

The passion may also refer to Pickover's infatuation with the riddles of mathematics. He deals with classic problems such as that of the Bridges of Konigsberg or the always popular secrets of magic squares. Some of the mathematical investigations are a little further off the beaten track. For example, what is the most forgettable license plate? A friend of Pickover, a physicist, actually has a plate with the string of letters "syzygys." (See "customer image") Is this impossible to remember? Most people may say yes. However, it is easy to recall if you are a solar eclipse devotee or a fan of the musical group of that name. Pickover concludes that the string with the highest entropy (the most disorder) is the most forgettable, e.g., the binary string 11010010.

This is an excellent book for those who would like to share the passion for mathematics of Ramujan and Pickover.

A Treasure Chest of Curisoities

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and found material I had never encountered before in any book. In particular, these novel topics included: Schmidhuber circles (created by some very simple rules), the world's most forgettable license plate, calculating prodigy Rudiger Gamm, and several fascinating snippets on tic-tac-toe.

Pickover has a particularly interesting set of sections that introduce the reader to numbers like Conway's nimbers, octonions, surreal numbers, and related. There's also quite a collection of mathematical constants to ponder: Apery's, Brun's, Chaitin, Champernowne, coincidental, Copeland-Erdös, Euler's gamma, Euler-Mascheroni, fine structure, golden ratio, infinite power tower, Landau-Ramanujan, Liouville, Mandelbrot, Mill's, pi, and Thue.

Finally, the book is littered with great-looking formulas from Ramanujan. Just how could Ramanujan have discovered these gems?

I liked some if the odd prime number contests and challenges, especially the "Triangle of the Gods," where Pickover had asked colleagues to find the first prime number in this interesting growing triangle:

Marvellous collection of curious math facts

Clifford A. Pickover's book A Passion for Mathematics is a marvellous collection of curious math facts that is sure to please lovers of Recreational Mathematics everywhere.

Pickover's book is filled with math curiosities that will enchant all those with a genuine interest in and love of recreational mathematics.

Pickover's book contains many mathematical gems. Within its covers there are many beautiful and interesting formulas involving the famous math constant, Pi. On page 78 of the book Pickover gives a truly beautiful and wonderful equation involving the two famous transcendentals, Pi and e. This equation illustrates the beauty and harmony that is to be found throughout mathematics.

The book is crammed with extremely interesting number facts. Many delightful puzzles are also packed between its covers.

I particularly liked Pickover's discussion of Sam Loyd's mixed teas puzzle, which illustrates just how good a mathematician Sam Loyd was.

This book will find a very welcome place on my bookshelf. Pickover's book will also be welcomed by all those who like to read about or collect curious mathematical facts and oddities.
